↓ MY MARK 1 TOOLING

I was lucky enough to buy the Clarkson in a University sale.
It is in excellent condition, with paperwork, and some bits of tooling.

The original booklet showed the price they paid as 150 pounds, or '300 pounds with bits'.
I think this is a 1965 machine, serial number 9866.
There is something wrong with the 3 phase motor windings, so I have installed a new single phase motor.
I'm short of space, so I have stored the large pedestal and have bench mounted the business end.

↓ As soon as I got it home I made a box for most of the bits.

These taper tool holders fit directly in the Universal Head.
These are not the genuine Clarkson morse sockets.
I took a chance and bought these blind off ebay. There is a bit of battering on them, but they fit the Head perfectly.

A note from the March Engineering Operators Manual:
"If you use Dry Grinding Machines for 12 hours per week or more you must supply some means of dust extraction.
You may either link your March Tool & Cutter Grinding Machine to your existing system or use a separate March Dust Extraction Unit which can be purchased as an optional extra. If, however, you do not require dust extraction facilities you must blank off the guard outlet with 1/8" minimum thickness of plate."
The law requires you to guard as much of the wheel as practically possible.

↓ This brand new Universal Head was up for sale from Jubilee machine Tools.
Going by the paint colour I think this is made by March Engineering and is maybe a Mark 2 item (although it could very well have been supplied with their Mark 1 machines).
I guess the serrated collar can be used to index the workhead.

↓ Here are some Spindle Extension dimensions to make an exact copy of the original (to be completed).

UPDATE .. the dimensions in the plans and drawings section maybe more reliable than those here.
I will revise this section once I know the correct dimensions (which should be soon).

The body is 1.5 inch/38mm diameter.
The body is 3.75inch/95mm long.
Many thanks to Mr Panayi for providing the above dimensions.

I have read elsewhere that the body is 2.5inch/63.5mm long.
Maybe the above 95mm dimension is really 2.5inch\63mm for the body plus 32mm for the spindle, making an overall length of 3.75inch\95mm) ?
I would say the diameter of the Spindle Extension is definitely 38mm, to match the diameter of the machine spindle flange.

The spindle portion is the same as the machine spindle i.e. is 32mm long overall, has a 22mm long 1/2inch BSF threaded portion, and a 10mm plain portion.
I will confirm these dimensions once I see an original Spindle Extension (anyone?)

It looks easy enough to make a Spindle Extension that will work and it does not need to be exactly like the original.

Here are the dimensions needed in order make an exact copy of the original Spindle Extension:

1. Diameter of the body (1.5 inch/38mm)
2. Length of the body (3.75inch/95mm or 2.5inch/63.5mm)
3. Width across the spanner flats (?)
4. Width of the spanner slot (?)
5. Distance of spanner slot edge from the end of body that has the internal thread (?)
6. The internal and external threads are 1/2inch BSF Left Hand

If you have an original part I would be more that interested to know the correct dimensions (Steve microstoc@hotmail.com).

↓ I have not got the Spindle Extension.
This is Pani Panayi's homemade Spindle Extension.
This Spindle Extension was up for sale at http://www.homeworkshop.org.uk

The body is 60mm long.
The spindle is 43mm long.

↓ This is a photo of two Spindle Extensions (not mine).
I don't know if these are genuine Clarkson or not.
The internal and external threads are 1/2 inch BSF Left Hand.
Spindle 1 - the body is 70mm long, the spindle is 43mm long.
Spindle 2 - the body is 50mm long, the spindle is 34mm long.
